This year’s Voices series starts with a newly published author, Lynne Heinzmann, winner of the Fairfield Book Prize. Frozen Voices, a work of historical fiction, tells the stories of four people who boarded the ill-fated passenger steamship Larchmont in Providence, Rhode Island on February 11, 1907. By the next morning 137 of the 156 people aboard the ship were dead and the ship was at the bottom of Block Island Sound. Lynne will show slides of historical images, read from the novel and share her writing experience. Please register.

Deborah Sampson of Massachusetts served in the Revolutionary War dressed as a man. In the Civil War, Rhode Island’s own Kady Brownell joined her husband on the front lines. Author, lecturer and Varnum Trustee Brian Wallin will tell these stories along with those of other women who contributed to war efforts over the centuries and who provided the foundation that enables American women to participate in every area of military service today. Reamer gives an inside view of the workings of the Rhode Island Parole Board. As the second speaker in our “Rhode Island Voices 2017,” Reamer will share some of the insights he has gained during his twenty-four years on the Board. His voice, or his name, may also be familiar to you as the host of This I Believe, Rhode Island on RI NPR. Registration is requested.
