North Kingstown Free Library
Linking into the NKFL Catalog from bookstore web sites
Have you ever been searching for a book in the Amazon or Barnes
& Noble web sites and you've wanted to see if the North Kingstown Free Library owns
the book? There's a new tool that you can use called a "bookmarklet" that
makes linking into our online catalog seamless and
easy. (ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, a unique number assigned to
every book that is published.)
Setting up the Internet Explorer 6 web browser:
1. Right-click on
and choose "Add to Favorites"
2. A security alert will pop up, click on Yes if you would like to set up the tool
3. In the Add Favorite box, type NKFL ISBN Lookup in the Name field
4. Scroll down and double-click on the "Links" folder (if you don't see the
Links folder, click on the Create In button and it will become available)
5. Click on the OK button
6. Click on the View menu, go to Toolbars, and be sure that there is a check mark to the
left of "Links"
7. Most browsers come with existing links in the "Links" folder. If you
delete the links that you never use, you can adjust your toolbar so that the NKFL ISBN
Lookup button is accessible from the Links toolbar
Using the tool:
1. Go to Amazon (the tool isn't
working with Barnes & Noble)
2. Search for a book
3. When you find a book that you're interested in, be sure to choose the hardcover edition
unless the book was originally released in paperback
4. Click on the NKFL ISBN Lookup button on your Links toolbar in Internet Explorer
5. A new browser window will automatically open up in the North Kingstown online catalog
with the results of an ISBN search for the book that you're looking for.
If the tool doesn't work:
1. Pop-ups need to be enabled. If you are blocking popups you
need to enable popups on the Amazon web site in order for the tool to work.
2. Your version of Internet Explorer may be too old. To download the most recent
version, go to Internet
Explorer Home
3. If you get the message, "Sorry, could not find anything matching [ISBN #]"
then it means that none of the RI public libraries own a book with that ISBN
4. The tool does not work with most DVDs, videos, and other A/V materials.
For more information about bookmarklets, go to the LibraryLookup
page and thanks to Sheila
Lennon for spreading the word about this tool.
